I’m writing this on a glorious sunny day full of all the signs of spring. I don’t know about you, but I struggle a bit with the darkness of winter, so when the spring comes around with all its signs of new life it just symbolises hope for me, that the lighter days are just around the corner.
This month we had two renovations in full swing in two different locations, both period properties which I love working on, but there are always extra challenges with these sorts of projects, which sort of makes it a bit exciting but also nerve-wracking with uncertainty.
I think a lot of the time people make the assumption that designers just look at pretty fabrics and plump up cushions all day haha! This couldn’t be further from the truth really. We are problem solvers. The bulk of my role is to identify problems with the spaces that are causing discomfort for my client in terms of how the room functions and supports them, and create practical solutions to solve these problems in order to create their happy space.
I’m going to be sharing a series shortly on my Instagram devoted to showing how we have tackled various problems and the successful solutions we have come up with on various projects. I just need to get my act together really and create or instruct this content haha! Eek!
One of the properties we are working on is a listed building (another challenge). The layout was just so awkward and the room had no flow, so I advised we move the awkward wall and create balance in the room by creating a faux chimney breast to allow a recess for symmetrical storage and shelving on either side of the fireplace. This is a more traditional look anyway for this Georgian property. The problem being, we then lost part of the beautiful ornate cornice that ran around the room. Not to worry! We instructed a specialist plasterer who handmade onsite identical cornicing using plaster and crafted it directly onto the new walls. My mind was blown by this craftsmanship! What a skill! And now this space looks like it had always been there! So much more sympathetic to the period of this property.
I can’t wait to share this space once it’s completely finished it is going to be stunning!
Crikey that turned into a bit of a novel didn’t it! And here was me worried I had nothing to say! Haha! I think we all know I love a chat, even if it is in the newsletter.
Anyway, we now have availability for new project work to book in from May into Summer. If I can help you solve some problems (I knew there was a point to the above story!) and help design and install your happy space, please get in touch soon. I’d love to chat about your new project and how we could help you.
Love Terian
