Designing spaces that feel like *you*

Welcome to the second news letter of the year. You’ll be excited to read that it's not Terian writing this week but it is I, the most fabulous and inspiring junior designer, Chloe. Terian is currently wrangling her children during the April holidays so lucky for our fair readers I have been trusted with the responsibility of the newsletter. Please email in to let Terian know this is the best issue there’s ever been.

On to this month's theme picked by our lovely project coordinator Kirsten -

Designing to evoke a feeling in a space.

When you fill out one of our questionnaires one of the first things we ask is “how would you like the space to feel?” This question is more important to us than any colour scheme preferences or pinterest goals. This is how we get to know you as a client and understand your needs. We understand even though you’ve had help designing the space, your home should represent you as an individual. Of course this has a different meaning for every client and is what makes working on each of our projects fun and exciting. There’s no template or guidelines to this, we want to celebrate your uniqueness and encourage it to shine through our work.

COSY AND COCOONED

Don’t underestimate lighting!!

Dimmer switches for the big lights, wall lighting for some wow factor and table lamps for that extra moodiness. Definitely ditch those cool white bulbs for a warmer tone and you’ll notice a difference straight away.

Try layering different textures and materials with rugs, throws and cushions to get that snug feeling. You might see a lot of soft velvets in our work, we love using this material on soft furnishings to create a comfortable, rich ambiance.

Don’t be afraid to paint the ceiling and skirtings! Who says these have to stay white? Painting these in a complimentary shade to your wall paint completely transforms a space.

LIGHT AND UPLIFTING

Make use of your natural light! Keep windows free of furniture and clutter and use light voiles or sheer curtains to provide privacy but still let that light shine through. That’s right your granny's net curtains are back in fashion. Just make sure if you have neighbours close by that you layer it with a lined curtain for those more vulnerable moments.

Every room needs a mirror. A mirror placed adjacent to a window or entry makes the space feel twice as big and airy. Don’t just limit full length mirrors to a dressing area, these can be used anywhere around the home (and are great for a quick mirror selfie).

Define a pallet that’s not going to overwhelm you. It’s not a secret that we love colour! But we do try to create a palette that works as a finished story, not a multi season spinoff. A reminder that your room's palette isn’t just the colours you paint on the walls, it’s also the materials you use and your lighting. Make sure this is well defined otherwise things will start to get muddy.

We hope this has given you a little insight into how designing with feeling at the forefront can completely transform a space, making it not only beautiful but totally personal to you.
